Chief Nursing Officer Overview:

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for overseeing all nursing and clinical departments within our organization, ensuring that patient care is of the highest quality and staffing is managed efficiently. This role includes the formulation of nursing policies, budget management, leading initiatives for performance enhancement, and working closely with hospital leadership to ensure that nursing services align with the overall objectives of the facility. A master's degree in nursing or a related field is essential, along with a minimum of five years of progressive management experience in a hospital setting and the necessary nursing licensure.

Our organization is currently in search of a Chief Nursing Officer for our surgical hospital.

The surgical hospital is a collaborative venture with a healthcare partner and is a 29-bed acute care facility located at 1800 Park Place Avenue in Fort Worth, Texas. Since its establishment in 2014, it has been dedicated to serving the Fort Worth community and surrounding areas. The hospital offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including an Emergency Department, a 25-bed inpatient unit, a 3-bed intensive care unit, diagnostic imaging, and 14 operating rooms equipped with advanced surgical systems. With a medical staff comprising 180 physicians, the hospital provides various specialty surgical services. In 2024, the average daily patient census was 15, with an average length of stay of 2.1 days. Surgical services offered include, but are not limited to, ENT, bariatric, general surgery, pulmonary, neurosurgery, gynecology, oral surgery, orthopedics, pain management, plastics, podiatry, and urology. The facility employs 163 full-time Registered Nurses, all of whom hold at least an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Position Summary:

The CNO is tasked with managing all nursing and clinical departments within the hospital. This role ensures the delivery of quality patient care and guarantees that adequately trained personnel are available to fulfill these responsibilities. The CNO is accountable for all departmental functions that support the hospital's mission, vision, and goals. This position identifies cost-effective systems necessary for departmental operations, taking into account business trends, resource availability, and customer needs. Establishing strong working relationships with patients, physicians, employees, volunteers, and vendors is crucial. The CNO utilizes continuous customer satisfaction data and employee feedback to identify and address issues. Collaboration with senior management is essential to achieve facility objectives. The CNO also develops, directs, and ensures compliance with Standards of Practice that enhance healthcare delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate a comprehensive nursing care plan that aligns with the hospital's mission and addresses patient needs.
  • Evaluate work schedules, assignments, patient classifications, and supervisory reports to determine the necessary staffing levels for quality care.
  • Recommend and implement changes in personnel and assignments as needed.
  • Serve as an administrative resource for clinical directors and coordinators in areas such as:
    • Policy and procedure development and updates;
    • Budget preparation for clinical departments;
    • Personnel evaluations and grievance handling;
    • Enhancing clinical service performance.
  • Assist in developing hospital-wide patient care programs, policies, and procedures that ensure patient needs are assessed and met.
  • Create staffing plans for all nursing units and service lines.
  • Participate in Medical Staff and Executive Committee meetings, contributing to organizational performance improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the governing body, management team, medical staff, and clinical areas to develop, implement, and evaluate the hospital's strategic plan, budgets, and policies.
  • Regularly meet with the administrative team to discuss objectives, staffing requirements, and management challenges.
  • Stay informed about advancements in nursing care and management through literature, workshops, seminars, and networking with other CNOs.
  • Implement an ongoing evaluation process for patient care to ensure continuous improvement as part of the hospital-wide performance enhancement strategy.
  • Ensure the nursing process is consistently applied to all patients.
  • Guarantee the timely availability of nursing services to patients.
  • Incorporate current research findings into nursing care policies and procedures.
  • Ensure nursing staff adhere to established processes in patient care and organizational functions.
  • Delegate responsibilities to nursing staff to enhance the performance of nursing services.
  • Actively engage in the hospital's leadership functions.
  • Collaborate with other leaders to design and deliver patient care and services.
  • Work with hospital leaders to ensure adequate staffing of qualified nursing personnel.
  • Develop, present, and manage the nursing services budget.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Mandatory: Bachelor's degree in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or Business Administration.

Experience:

  • Mandatory: 5 years of progressive management experience in a hospital setting overseeing multiple complex nursing departments.

    Preferred: Previous experience as a CNO or in a surgical hospital.

Certifications:

  • Mandatory: Current licensure, certification, or registration to practice as required by state law and regulations. AHA BLS certification is also required.
