Job Description

Overview This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Delta location. The facility is located approximately nine miles west of Delta, Colorado, and has a capacity of 477 inmates at minimum custody levels. Position Correctional Officer I (CO I) – maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Officers communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors and the public; they work as a cohesive team to manage a diverse inmate population and ensure public safety. Responsibilities Work directly with inmates in a locked facility; monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas; Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required); Monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles; Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms; Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule; escort and transport inmates in state vehicles; Monitor visiting areas; conduct counts; cross check and maintain movement logs; Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, patrol, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches); Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards; inspect inmate mail and property; Respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes); follow tool and key control protocols; attend roll calls; Document incidents using established reporting practices and communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors. Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of 24/7 facilities. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualification: High School Diploma or GED certificate. Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license; Disciplinary histories and prior terminations are considered; certain prior terminations may disqualify. Successful completion of a background investigation; provide disposition of charges if applicable. All job offers are contingent upon a health screening certifying the ability to perform essential functions. Successfully pass all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics and related assessments. Must be willing to work all shifts, weekends and holidays; may be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum; travel as needed; tuberculosis screening required for new employees. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual; mentoring or volunteer experience.
