This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Center for Teaching & Learning. Position Summary: The Educational Technologist reports directly to the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Academic Technology as part of a joint team herein referred to as the CTL. The Educational Technologist’s core duties include leading the coordination and administration of the campus learning management system (Canvas) and related educational technologies. This position is also responsible for the collaborative support of campus educators in implementing effective instructional pedagogies and technologies for all learning formats (face-to-face, blended, hybrid, online, digitally enhanced). This position serves as a resource for faculty and instructional staff in the design, development, review, and revision of learning and teaching, and its associated assessment, for the purpose of supporting the success of student learning. As the ‘front door’ to receiving help on LMS issues at Cal Poly Humboldt, one must be capable of answering questions and solving problems requiring a strong and consistent communication exchange with all the various units within Academic Affairs. The Educational Technologist is responsible for developing a culture of high quality customer service and professionalism in every interaction.

Key Responsibilities:

60% LMS Coordination and Support

  • Provides leadership and coordination over the daily tasks associated with campus-wide support for the learning management system; LMS project management and data reporting, e.g., Canvas institutional assessment, requiring data analytics, data portal, data reporting that links data to student success, in collaboration with campus partners
  • Works directly with faculty, staff and students to support their use of the learning management system and related tools
  • Actively creates and contributes to ongoing documentation
  • Participates in team planning sessions to implement productive solutions to new technology and functional requirements
  • Maintains workflows and communication within the LMS team including assigning tasks/work tickets and providing feedback to team members in order to improve services
  • Manages manually-created courses, user accounts, permissions, guest access, roles, sub-accounts, and the theme to customize the LMS
  • Coordinates with ITS to manage the data feed from the student information system (SIS) to Canvas to upload courses, sections, users and enrollments, including special projects such as orientations
  • Assists in leading the CTL team with the testing of new educational technology tools, integrations, upgrades and patching, and documentation of testing results
  • Maintains and resolves requirements issues as they arise and escalates as required
  • Performs setup and testing of user interface modifications and integrations in a test or development Learning Management System (LMS) environment prior to releasing them in a production environment with direct application to course and instructional material.
  • Collaborates with vendors on LMS third-party tools
  • Collaborates with ITS and other units to solve problems related to the LMS
  • Generates and manages training within the Learning Management System
  • Supervises, schedules, manages time cards, and trains student assistants
  • Audits and monitors data integrity and security within LMS

30% Provide course design, development, and academic technology support for campus educators

  • Provide consultative support for faculty in the optimal design and development of curriculum and instruction across all learning formats guided by CSU Quality Learning & Teaching (QLT) instrument, or equivalent, and Universal Design principles, including the creation of accessible course materials as part of the CSU Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI)
  • Supporting faculty in making discernible choices about technologies, pedagogies, and design as they relate to advancing learning outcomes
  • Facilitate the effective implementation of instructional and technological innovation by sharing research findings of evidence-based practices
  • Design, develop, and gather learning, teaching, and assessment resources in a variety of formats to support course offerings
  • Develop and investigate courseware and curriculum software tools and support
  • Collaborate with content experts, other instructional designers, librarians, graphics specialists, instructional librarians, learning management system specialists, CSU resource personnel, and multimedia developers to expand the use of QLT, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Understanding by Design (UbD) in course design and development
  • Work closely with campus faculty and related groups on issues of faculty professional development as it relates to learning and teaching technologies to support pedagogies including related video-conferencing technologies including Zoom or similar.
  • Collaboratively design, develop, and facilitate workshops, intensives, seminars, brown bags, and communities across various formats as related to course design, development, facilitation, and appropriate educational technologies
  • Collaborate with CTL team members to enhance participation in learning opportunities and to develop metrics for evaluating their effectiveness.
  • Participate in the assessment of the needs of faculty for future instructional and faculty development activities and projects
  • Engage in ongoing research and development on emerging technologies, design, pedagogy, learning, and their related interconnectedness to advance the work of the Center for Teaching & Learning
  • Facilitates end user training of LMS application and other educational technology tools
  • Develops instructional materials, training materials

  • Knowledge of learning management systems and the instructional design process

  • Ability to demonstrate organization of information and resources in a course to support both learning (student perspective) and teaching (faculty perspective), e.g.,creation of an activity such as a discussion using the LMS technology,

Minimum Qualifications:

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and foundational knowledge and skills in technical information systems.
  • Experience providing information technology support.
  • A career level employee must have a minimum of two years of full time professional experience providing administration of an LMS and related support.
  • Additional relevant experience can be substituted for equivalent education on a year for year basis.
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Experience in training and learning design and development, experience with eLearning concepts and tools and instructional design knowledge
  • Experience in leading a technical support team of five or more personnel
